CHESS FESTCHESS FESTCHESS FEST

On Saturday, December 6, 2003,
the Georgia O'Keeffe Chess Club will sponsor our annual all-day CHESS FEST.

Play rated tournament chess or unrated beginners games.  Kids and adults can team up in the Bughouse tournament and compete to be the 2003 State Bughouse Champion.  They can play rated Quick-Chess, or stretch their brains in the chess puzzle contest!

Each year we attract hundreds of players K-12, and some of New Mexico's top scholastic champions. Whole families spend the day, and buses bring chess kids from around the state.  Our playground is always packed and school spirit is alive! Volunteers serve up chili, hot dogs and all sorts of snacks.

BASIC CHESS RULES

Here are some basics:

Set up your board with a white square in your back-rank right corner. Always white on the right.

Queen on her color (i.e., black queen starts out on a black square, white queen begins on a white square).

Try to control the center of the board.

RATINGS
USCF membership is required to play in some tournaments.
Once you sign up as a member of the United States Chess Federation, you will receive ratings based on your wins and losses in rated tournaments.

TOUCH MOVE
In tournament play, if you touch it, you must move it.  Thus the important chess saying "Sit on your hands!"  In other words, picture your move in your mind before your hand touches the piece.

BUGHOUSE
Bughouse is always fun to watch and loads of fun to play.
Your partner gets to use the pieces that you win from your opponent, and you're playing a whole game in 5 minutes with a clock.
You never have to say CHECK, so you can make a surprise attack!
It's fast and furious and often funny!

CLOCKS
You may be required to play with a clock if your opponent brings one. Don't forget to press your clock after every move, or you may end up giving away time to your opponent. The city's league meets are less structured and do not require you to use a clock.
