Friends of the Library

(to visit the FOL's home page, click here)

Friends of the Library is an organization of O'Keeffe volunteers who believe that children become better readers by practicing reading, just as basketball players become better free-throw shooters by practicing free throws. FOL volunteers help our students become "Bibliomaniacs" by arranging light-hearted reading activities throughout the school year, by staffing the library so students and parents can enjoy daily checkouts, and by sponsoring our popular book clubs that encourage the children to read more and better books. Funds raised by the Friends of the Library support visits by authors, illustrators, and storytellers, and help to keep our outstanding Library collection up to date.

Check It Out

(check-in and check-out information)

Students and parents may check out books every day.

Kindergarten students may check out one book for one week. First, second, and third graders may check out two books for one week. Fourth and fifth graders may check out three books for one week.

To encourage at-home reading, parents may check out books under their own names. Parents who are Friends of the Library (FOL) members may check out up to 15 books for two weeks  and parents who are not FOL members may check out up to 5 books for two weeks.

If you want to renew a book, you must bring the book to the circulation desk and ask a volunteer to renew it for you. If you do not bring in the book, the book cannot be renewed.

There’s a special rule for reference materials, which must be checked out after 2:00 pm and returned by 8:55 am the next day.

Library privileges are suspended when a book is overdue.

You Can Help Our Library Thrive

...volunteer! Our library volunteers are wonderfully friendly and there's something for everyone to do in our library, from a one-time commitment in the evening to a regular weekly library shift.

...join Friends of the Library. Just stop by the Library to join or call the school (293-4259) and ask to have a membership form sent home with your student.

...make a donation to Friends of the Library. Donations made through the APS Foundation are tax-deductible.

...order an engraved dedication brick for the Outdoor Reading Area. To order, see our librarian, Ms. Huggins, or any Library volunteer.

...request a donation — a book, an engraved brick, or cash — as a gift for a holiday, birthday, graduation, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.

...donate a needed book to our collection. Ask Ms. Huggins to suggest a title.

..."adopt" a book already in the collection. Adoptions are $5 for a paperback or $10 for a hardcover book. You can dedicate an adopted book in honor of someone special ― perhaps the teacher who taught your child (or you!) to read. You can also adopt a book as an "extra" birthday gift for your child or as a good-bye present for a departing fifth grader. As with engraved dedication bricks, the possibilities are endless!
